The Queen K Design-Build Team is comprised of Goodfellow Bros., Inc. (GBI) as the design-builder teamed with SSFM International Inc. (SSFM) as the lead designer. GBI has 86 years of history 27 on the Hawai’ian Islands building numerous heavy highway transportation projects for most Federal, State and local governmental agencies. SSFM, a 49 year old, Hawai’i-based, minority-owned business, is an industry leader in design and construction management. We are complimented by several key sub consultants that make the Queen K Design-Build Team the best team for the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway Widening Design-Build Project (QKH Widening Project).


Collectively we bring a solution to the Hawai’i Department of Transportation (HDOT) to answer the project objectives outlined in the request for proposal (RFP). We have the experts on each team to deliver the project on-time, within budget and at a pace meeting public expectation. We are the local team with island-style partnerships and have always taken a relational approach to our projects. Our team includes local companies, employing local people -- all with local experience.

The Queen K Design-Build Team will deliver the project objectives by attention and execution to the following:

  • A committed cooperative team approach philosophy to include the HDOT on all administrative, design and construction processes in addition to the formal partnering workshop,

  • A comprehensive outreach program through design and construction utilizing websites, traditional media and multi-media platforms to include a locally adapted program. In addition, our team is local and from the Island of Hawai‘i and understands local needs and trends,

  • External and independent quality assurance and quality control through both design and construction,

  • A well-conceived construction phasing plan, that will minimize traffic impacts to the public as well as some of the special events that take place in Kailua-Kona,

  • Providing a safe work zone for the traveling public and project personnel,

  • Being the first responder to complaints and concerns at the project level. Referrals to the HDOT will come with recommendations.
